📜 Śrīpāda Charithāmṛtham

The Source • The Sacred Account • The Remembrance
తెలుగు

There are texts that we read. There are teachings that we remember. And there are words that quietly begin to change the way we live.

Śrīpāda Charithāmṛtham is approached here in that spirit.

A sacred account preserved through time, it forms the foundation from which this Samaj seeks to remember Śrīpāda, understand His teachings and walk the path with greater awareness.

📖 The Charithāmṛtham — A Sacred Account

The Charithāmṛtham is traditionally attributed to Śaṅkara Bhaṭṭa, a devotee and contemporary of Śrīpāda ŚrīVallabha.

The account is traditionally said to have been compiled in Sanskrit and preserved in manuscript form. It speaks not only of the life and divine manifestations of Śrīpāda, but also of His teachings, conversations, instructions and profound insights into dharma and spiritual life.

The Charithāmṛtham is therefore approached not merely as a biography, but as a spiritual account through which devotees remember the presence, words and teachings of Śrīpāda.

Charithāmṛtham may be understood as a journey of remembrance — remembering the life, words, grace and teachings of Śrīpāda ŚrīVallabha.

🌿 Preservation • Transmission • Re-emergence

The sacred account is traditionally understood to have been preserved with great care through hundreds of years.

The Charithāmṛtham itself speaks of the text being preserved for generations and of its eventual emergence into wider awareness at a particular point in time.

During its transmission through the generations, it is believed that the text was rendered into Telugu. The name of the person responsible for this intervening Telugu translation is not identified in the account as presently known to us.

The tradition associated with the Charithāmṛtham connects its eventual re-emergence with the 33rd generation of the family lineage associated with Śrīpāda's maternal grandfather.

The indication for its re-emergence is traditionally associated with the year 1999. Accounts of this period identify Malladi Govinda Deekshitulu as the person through whom the preserved Telugu text was brought forward.

🕊️ Malladi Govinda Deekshitulu — Bringing the Text to Light

By this time, the old Telugu manuscript had become extremely fragile and brittle with age.

Malladi Govinda Deekshitulu carefully copied its contents onto fresh paper so that the sacred text would not be lost with the deterioration of the old manuscript.

As described in the tradition and in the account associated with the bringing forth of the text, the old, worn papers were subsequently immersed in the River Krishna, in accordance with the direction contained in the Charithāmṛtham.

This was not understood merely as the disposal of an old manuscript. Within the sacred account, it formed part of the ordained sequence through which the text was to pass from its long period of preservation into its next stage of revelation.

1999–2001
The period around the turn of the 21st century is regarded in the tradition as the time when the Charithāmṛtham emerged once again into the visible world of devotees.

🌸 The Sign from Gaṇagāpur

The account of this period also records an unusual and unsolicited prasāda from Gaṇagāpur, which Govinda Deekshitulu understood as the sign foretold in the Charithāmṛtham.

According to the devotional account, this prasāda came without his having sought or arranged for it, and its arrival was recognised as significant in relation to the instructions and indications preserved in the sacred text.

The event strengthened his understanding that the time had come for the Charithāmṛtham to be brought into wider awareness.

The significance of these events is understood within the tradition of the Charithāmṛtham itself — where divine indications, human responsibility and the unfolding of time are seen as part of one continuous sacred sequence.

🙏 The Offering at Pithāpuram

After carefully preparing the fresh copy and completing the prescribed parāyaṇa, Malladi Govinda Deekshitulu brought the preserved Telugu text to the Śrīpāda Vallabha Mahāsaṁsthānam at Pithāpuram.

Thus, the text that had remained carefully preserved through generations was once again placed before the sacred institution at Pithāpuram, from where it could be brought to the notice of devotees.

The journey was not merely from one manuscript to another.

It was a journey from preservation to revelation, from silence to remembrance, and from one generation to the next.

🪷 Śrī Sajjangada Rāmaswāmi and the Mahāsaṁsthānam

The tradition further associates the establishment of the Śrīpāda Vallabha Mahāsaṁsthānam at Pithāpuram with Śrī Sajjangada Rāmaswāmi, a disciple of Śrīdhara Swami.

He is remembered as having been instrumental in establishing the Mahāsaṁsthānam at the sacred birthplace of Śrīpāda.

The account surrounding the re-emergence of the Charithāmṛtham further connects Śrī Sajjangada Rāmaswāmi and his disciples with the handing over of this glorious work to the Mahāsaṁsthānam.

In this living tradition, the preservation of the text, the emergence of the Telugu manuscript, the work of Govinda Deekshitulu, and the presence of the Mahāsaṁsthānam are understood as interconnected parts of the Charithāmṛtham's journey through time.

📚 Mahāsaṁsthānam • Publication • Responsibility

With the Charithāmṛtham having been brought to Pithāpuram, the Mahāsaṁsthānam became an important centre through which the sacred work could reach devotees.

Over time, the Charithāmṛtham has appeared in different languages and editions, allowing its teachings to reach an ever-wider circle of seekers.

For devotees, however, preservation is not merely a question of printing a book.

It also means protecting the integrity of the sacred account, respecting the tradition through which it has been transmitted, and ensuring that future generations can approach it without unnecessary alteration, interpolation or distortion.

🙏 Our Responsibility as Devotees

As devotees, it becomes our responsibility to approach the Śrīpāda Charithāmṛtham through the authentic literature published and made available by the Śrīpāda Vallabha Mahāsaṁsthānam at Pithāpuram.

The Mahāsaṁsthānam stands in the sacred tradition as the custodian and authorised institution entrusted with the preservation and dissemination of the Divine Text, in accordance with the tradition and the directions associated with Śrīpāda.

The literature made available through the Mahāsaṁsthānam provides devotees with a trusted source through which the Charithāmṛtham may be received in its preserved form, without the scope for later additions, alterations or interpretations becoming mixed into the original narrative.

Choosing such authentic editions is therefore not merely a matter of preference. It is also an act of reverence towards the sacred text and towards the lineage through which it has been preserved and entrusted to devotees.

A note on authenticity and preservation

The Charithāmṛtham has travelled through generations before reaching the Mahāsaṁsthānam at Pithāpuram. As devotees, we have a responsibility to preserve that continuity.

We therefore encourage seekers to obtain the Charithāmṛtham and related authentic literature directly from the Śrīpāda Vallabha Mahāsaṁsthānam, so that the sacred account may continue to be received with its textual integrity and spiritual tradition respected.

🌱 Why the Charithāmṛtham Matters

The value of the Charithāmṛtham is not only in knowing what happened in the past.

Its deeper purpose is to allow the teachings to enter the present.

A devotee may read about an event and find a teaching. Another may encounter a single sentence and find a question within.

Someone else may simply remember Śrīpāda's name and feel drawn inward.

In this way, the Charithāmṛtham becomes more than a historical account. It becomes a companion in the seeker's journey.

Read slowly.
Understand gently.
Remember often.
Let one teaching become part of your life.

🙏 Our Responsibility as Devotees

A sacred tradition survives not merely because a text is preserved, but because its spirit is lived.

Our responsibility is therefore simple:

To read with reverence.
To understand without haste.
To preserve without distortion.
To share without self-interest.
And above all, to allow the teachings to transform our own conduct.

The greatest remembrance of Śrīpāda is not only in speaking about Him.

It is in becoming a little more compassionate, truthful, selfless, patient and aware.

The Charithāmṛtham is a source.

Receive it.
Remember it.
Contemplate upon it.
Live it.
