Trikaraṇa Śuddhi

Purity • Thought • Word • Deed

Thought, word and action are not separate. When they become pure and move together in harmony, life begins to reflect the truth within.

A teaching from Śrīpāda
Trikaraṇa śuddhi is essentially having purity of thought, word and speech; and eventually aligning them in perfect synchronisation.

If man has to get rid of the pangs of poverty, or get released from sinful acts, he must have purity of mind, speech and body. This is called ‘trikaraṇa śuddhi’.

Divinity should be observed in thoughts. Only noble thoughts should be entertained. Whatever is thought should only come in the speech and whatever is conveyed in speech should only be found in action. A person who attains ‘trikaraṇa śuddhi’ becomes great and experiences higher states.

If there is variation between thought, speech and action, it is the absence of ‘trikaraṇa śuddhi’. Then he becomes a bad person.

There are many ways in this Kali Yugam to get salvation. Among them, chanting the Divine Name is the easiest way. When the sacred Name lingers on the tongue, the habit of speaking sacred words would be developed. When reciting the Name, if the mind is focused on God, mind also is sanctified. By that, one is further inspired to do noble/selfless deeds.

What is Trikaraṇa Śuddhi?

Trikaraṇa Śuddhi means bringing purity and harmony to the three dimensions through which we express ourselves — thought, word and action.

What we think should be noble. What we speak should arise from those noble thoughts. And what we do should remain aligned with both.

When these three move together without contradiction, there is an inner integrity in our living.

Thought → Word → Action

Let the thought be pure.
Let the word carry that purity.
Let the action express it.
Nāma Japa and Trikaraṇa Śuddhi

The teaching beautifully connects Trikaraṇa Śuddhi with the remembrance and chanting of the Divine Name.

When the sacred Name remains upon the tongue, our speech gradually becomes more conscious. When the mind is focused upon the Divine while chanting, the mind itself becomes sanctified.

From this inner purification arises a natural inspiration towards noble and selfless action.

Thus, Nāma Japa is not merely the repetition of a sacred Name. It can become a means of bringing thought, word and action into greater harmony.

A simple reflection

Before we speak, let us notice the thought behind the words.

Before we act, let us notice whether the action is aligned with what we truly hold within.

And when we find a difference between thought, word and action, let us not judge ourselves. Let us simply become aware and begin again.

🌼 Thought for the day

Let my thoughts be noble.

Let my words carry that nobility.

Let my actions reflect what I hold within.

May thought, word and deed become one in purity.
