Lesson 8

वचनम् — Singular • Dual • Plural

🌱 One, Two, Many

We have already learned that Sanskrit words have grammatical gender.

Now let us discover something very beautiful.

Sanskrit has a special form for two.
In English we usually say:

one → singular
two → plural

Sanskrit makes a special distinction:

one → singular
two → dual
more than two → plural

📖 वचनम् — Number

1
एकवचनम्
Ekavacanam
Singular
2
द्विवचनम्
Dvivacanam
Dual
∞
बहुवचनम्
Bahuvacanam
Plural

🌼 Let Us See It

We will use a very simple word:

बालः — boy
बालः।
bālaḥ
One boy.
बालौ।
bālau
Two boys.
बालाः।
bālāḥ
Boys.
Look at the change:

बालः → one
बालौ → two
बालाः → many

🌿 Another Little Pattern

Let us look at गजः — elephant.
गजः।
One elephant.
गजौ।
Two elephants.
गजाः।
Elephants.

🪷 We Already Know This

We met these words earlier:
अहम्
aham
I
वयम्
vayam
We
There is also a special Sanskrit form for the two of us.

We will learn it gently when we begin working with more pronouns.

🌱 Tiny Sentences

Now let us simply read.

Do not worry about grammar yet.
बालः पठति।
bālaḥ paṭhati
The boy reads.
बालौ पठतः।
bālau paṭhataḥ
The two boys read.
बालाः पठन्ति।
bālāḥ paṭhanti
The boys read.
See how both the noun and the verb can change.

पठति → one
पठतः → two
पठन्ति → many

We will study these verb forms properly later. For now, simply notice them.

🙏 Sanskrit Through Sādhana

Let us bring the same idea gently into our spiritual practice.
अहं जपामि।
ahaṃ japāmi
I chant.
वयं जपामः।
vayaṃ japāmaḥ
We chant.
वयं नमामः।
vayaṃ namāmaḥ
We bow.
वयं पठामः।
vayaṃ paṭhāmaḥ
We read / study.

🌼 See the Pattern

Number Sanskrit Meaning
One बालः one boy
Two बालौ two boys

Sanskrit gives the learner a special word-form for exactly two.

That special form is called द्विवचनम्.
