Lesson 10 — पुरुषः

Who is Acting? • Person & Verb

अहं पठामि।
I read.

One tiny sentence can teach us much.

🌱 Let us notice something

In the earlier lessons, we learned words such as अहम्, त्वम्, सः and वयम्.

We also learned simple verbs such as पठामि, गच्छामि and जपामि.

Now let us notice a beautiful feature of Sanskrit:

The form of the verb changes according to who is acting.

We will not memorise a large table today. We will simply listen to a few tiny sentences and notice the change.

🪷 Who is Acting?

Sanskrit traditionally speaks of three पुरुषाः — grammatical persons.

प्रथमपुरुषः
Third Person
he / she / it
मध्यमपुरुषः
Second Person
you
उत्तमपुरुषः
First Person
I / we
🌿 A small note

The Sanskrit names can feel different from the English labels. प्रथमपुरुषः is traditionally called the third person in English grammar terminology. For now, simply remember the meaning through the sentences.

🌱 One Person — One Tiny Sentence

अहं पठामि।
I read.
त्वं पठसि।
You read.
सः पठति।
He reads.
सा पठति।
She reads.

Look carefully at the last part of the verb:

मि I
सि you
ति he / she
Notice:

पठामि, पठसि, पठति all come from the same verb पठ् — to read / study.

🌼 From “I” to “We”

We already met वयम् in an earlier lesson.

अहं पठामि।
I read.
वयं पठामः।
We read.

Again, notice the ending:

पठामि I read
पठामः We read

Sanskrit therefore gives us another little clue through the verb itself.

🕉️ Let us try another verb

We already know गच्छ् — to go.

अहं गच्छामि।
I go.
त्वं गच्छसि।
You go.
सः गच्छति।
He goes.
वयं गच्छामः।
We go.
The pattern begins to become familiar:

अहं → -मि    त्वं → -सि    सः / सा → -ति

🙏 Sanskrit Through Sādhana

Now let us bring this learning gently into our own spiritual practice.

अहं नमामि।
I bow.
अहं जपामि।
I chant.
अहं ध्यायामि।
I meditate.
वयं जपामः।
We chant.
वयं नमामः।
We bow.

A language begins to become alive when its words become part of our own life.

✨ Who is Acting?

Choose the person and notice how the verb changes.

पठ् — to read

Choose one above.

🪷 Gentle Check

1. Which sentence means “I read”?

2. Which form means “You read”?

3. Which sentence means “She reads”?

4. Which ending do we see in पठामि?

5. What does वयं पठामः mean?

🌿 Read Slowly

Do not try to memorise everything at once.

अहं पठामि।
I read.
त्वं पठसि।
You read.
सः पठति।
He reads.
सा पठति।
She reads.
वयं पठामः।
We read.

Listen.
Repeat.
Notice.
Let the pattern settle naturally.

🪷 Manana — Contemplation

A sentence is not merely something to translate.

Let us experience it.

अहं जपामि।
I chant.
वयं जपामः।
We chant.

From I to we, the practice expands.

Let Sanskrit become not only something we learn — but something we live.

🌱 What comes next?

We now know how simple verbs change with the person who acts.

In the next lesson, we can take one more small step:

अहं पुस्तकं पठामि।
I read a book.

Here we will gently discover how a word can become the object of an action.

No large tables. No rushing. Just one tiny sentence at a time.
