Lesson 11 — द्वितीया

What is Being Acted Upon?

अहं पुस्तकं पठामि।
I read a book.

One more tiny step.

🌱 One Action — Something More

In Lesson 10 we asked: Who is acting?

Now let us ask one more simple question:

अहं पठामि।
I read.

What do I read?

पुस्तकं
a book

So we can say:

अहं पुस्तकं पठामि।
I read a book.
This is our first gentle glimpse of द्वितीया विभक्तिः.

We will simply call it the object form for now. There is no need to learn a large declension table yet.

🪷 Subject and Object

Look at the two important words:

अहम्
I
the one acting
पुस्तकम् → पुस्तकं
book
the object

In the sentence:

अहं पुस्तकं पठामि।
I read a book.

अहम् tells us who acts.

पुस्तकम् tells us what is acted upon.

The word पुस्तकम् appears as पुस्तकं here because it is being used as the object of the action.

🌿 Let us see a few tiny sentences

अहं पुस्तकं पठामि।
I read a book.
अहं पत्रं लिखामि।
I write a letter.
अहं जलं पिबामि।
I drink water.
अहं फलम् खादामि।
I eat fruit.
Notice the pattern:

अहं + something + action.

🙏 Now let us make it meaningful

Sanskrit becomes especially beautiful when the sentence connects with our own practice.

गुरुं नमामि।
I bow to the Guru.
श्रीपादं स्मरामि।
I remember Śrīpāda.
मन्त्रं जपामि।
I chant the mantra.
शान्तिं इच्छामि।
I desire peace.

Here, the words receiving the action are:

गुरुं श्रीपादं मन्त्रम् शान्तिम्

🌼 Look at the Word Ending

We have already seen words ending in -म्.

For many simple neuter words, the form remains the same in the subject and object positions.

पुस्तकम्
a book
पुस्तकं
a book — as object

The change from म् to ं is mainly a matter of pronunciation and sandhi in this position.

For now, simply read:

पुस्तकम् as the word form, and पुस्तकं पठामि naturally as part of the sentence.

✨ Build a Tiny Sentence

Choose what you want to act upon.

अहं ______ पठामि।

Choose one word above.

🌱 A Simple Question

When we want to ask “what?” about the object, Sanskrit commonly uses:

किम्?
What?

So:

त्वं किं पठसि?
What do you read?

A simple answer:

अहं पुस्तकं पठामि।
I read a book.

Question → Answer.
Slowly, Sanskrit begins to converse with us.

🪷 Gentle Check

1. Which sentence means “I read a book”?

2. In अहं पुस्तकं पठामि , what is the object?

3. Which means “I bow to the Guru”?

4. What does श्रीपादं स्मरामि mean?

5. What does किम्? mean?

🌿 Practise Gently

Read each sentence slowly.

अहं पुस्तकं पठामि।
I read a book.
अहं पत्रं लिखामि।
I write a letter.
गुरुं नमामि।
I bow to the Guru.
श्रीपादं स्मरामि।
I remember Śrīpāda.
मन्त्रं जपामि।
I chant the mantra.

🪷 Manana — Contemplation

Today we asked:

अहं किं करोमि?
What do I do?

And slowly we learned to say:

अहं जपामि।
I chant.
मन्त्रं जपामि।
I chant the mantra.

The sentence has become a little fuller. The practice has become a little more personal.

Let learning remain gentle.

🌱 What comes next?

We now know:

अहम् — who acts

पुस्तकम् — what is acted upon

पठामि — the action

In the next lesson, we can learn how to ask simple questions such as:

कः?
Who?

किम्?
What?

कुत्र?
Where?

Slowly, Sanskrit begins to become a living language.
